Wrap Up That Phone Call

phone-call-1-setupChristmas day is one of the most beautiful days of the year and one that shouldn’t be interrupted by the incessant ringing of a telephone. Make sure you turn your phone off and give this quick science experiment a try instead.

What do I need?

  • Balloon
  • Switched off phone

phone-call-2-readySTEP1 – The first thing to do is to make sure that your phone is turned off. (Not just because it’s Christmas but for the safety of this experiment).

WARNING: Use an older phone if you can’t take any risks!

STEP2 – Warm your balloon up and blow it up.

STEP3 – Push your phone into the side of your inflated balloon.

phone-call-3-wrapSTEP4 – As you release the end of your balloon and the air within it keep pushing your phone into your balloon.

STEP5 – Voila! Your phone will bug you no more as it’s now inside your balloon.

STEP6 – How to get your phone back? Gently inflate your balloon again being careful not to drop your phone as it comes back out.

What’s going on?

Finally, a bit of peace and quiet on Christmas day!

phone-call-4-removeSeriously, though. Why does your phone end up ‘inside your balloon’?

In truth, you phone is never really inside the balloon but it is well and truly wrapped up within the balloon. When you release the air from your balloon your balloon collapses in a certain shape. By pushing your phone towards the centre you manage to sneak it in within that shape.

More Fun Please! - Experiment like a real scientist!

  • Does this work with any type of phone? Remember not to use your latest phone if that phone is the world to you!
  • Can this experiment be done with different shaped balloons?
